Questions

Controls

How do I play?

Hold your iPhone sideways. Your left thumb works the left and right arrows (slide between them without lifting), with the flask just above them. Your right thumb has attack, jump and your calling's Special. Pause is at the top right.

How do I drop through a ledge or climb a vine?

Slide your left thumb down and hold it there a moment to drop through a ledge, or slide down and press jump together. Slide up to climb a vine, and lean toward a floor at the top to haul yourself onto it. In the tall levels, holding down while you stand looks below you.

A card explains each move the first time you meet a ledge and a vine.

The buttons are too small, or in the way

Settings › Button size: S, M or L. Settings opens from the title screen (top right), the map (beside Title) or the pause menu.

Can I use a game controller?

Yes, in the levels and on the map, with an MFi, Xbox or PlayStation controller: the d-pad or left stick to move, A to jump, X to attack, Y for your Special, the left shoulder for the flask, the right shoulder to take a pickup, and Menu to pause. The other screens are touch.

How do I turn off the sound, the music or the vibration?

Open Settings, from the title screen (top right), the map (beside Title) or the pause menu: the Sound, Music and Buzz switches are along its top. The pause screen has them too.

I can't hear anything

Check that your iPhone isn't on Silent: the switch on its side, or on newer iPhones the Action button or Control Center. Waxby follows Silent, like most games, and any music you're playing from another app keeps playing under it.

If it still has no sound, turn the volume up and check that the Sound and Music switches in Settings are on.

Saves

How does saving work?

Waxby saves by itself as you play. There are three save slots, each a whole game of its own: tap the title screen to see them, then tap a slot to carry on or an empty one to start a new game.

When your flame goes out, you wake at the last altar you lit, and the embers you were carrying spill where you fell. Get back to that spot to win them back.

I erased a save by mistake

Right after you erase a slot, an Undo button appears for a few seconds. If you left the saves before tapping it, open them again: Waxby offers the undo once more, until you erase another slot or close the app.

Can I rename my hero?

Yes: on the map, Sheet › Stats › Rename.

Moving to a new iPhone

Your purchase: Waxby belongs to your Apple Account. On the new iPhone, sign in with the same Apple Account and download it again from the App Store at no charge.

Your saves: they live only on your iPhone, not in an online account, but they are part of your iPhone's backup. Set up the new iPhone from an iCloud backup, a computer backup or Quick Start, and your saves come with it. If you install Waxby on a phone without restoring a backup, it starts fresh.

To free up space without losing your saves, use Settings › General › iPhone Storage › Waxby › Offload App. Delete App removes your saves too.

Difficulty

It's too hard

Try Settings › Candle strength › Gentle: monsters deal three quarters of their damage, starting from the next level you enter.

It also helps to replay earlier levels for experience and embers, spend your skill points (a lit altar offers skills while you have points, or use the map's Sheet), buy upgrades from Waxley, and drink from your flask before things get desperate. If one calling isn't working for you, the Callings button on the map lets you raise another. The Candleknight is the gentlest start.

It's too dark

Settings › Brightness: Lighter or Lightest. Turning up your iPhone's own brightness helps too.

What are Nightfall and the Witching Hour?

Two deeper difficulties for after the story. Finishing the story opens Nightfall, and finishing it on Nightfall opens the Witching Hour. The map suggests a hero level for each (30 and up, then 40 and up). Choose the difficulty with the bells at the top of the map.

Where are the settings?

On the title screen (top right), on the map (beside Title), or in a level: pause with the button at the top right, then tap Settings. There you'll find the Sound, Music and Buzz switches, damage numbers, screen shake, button size, brightness, candle strength, auto-equip, selling weaker finds and how story lines advance, with links to the privacy policy, this page and the licenses at the foot.

The Shop

How does Waxley's Shop work?

Waxley the chandler trades in embers, which you pick up in the levels. Open his Shop from the map, or from the results after you ring a bell.

  • Buy has new stock after every bell, including two pieces picked for your weakest slots. Fresh stock gets you a new selection right away, for embers.
  • Sell pays a quarter of his price. You can buy a piece back until you leave the Shop.
  • Relics offers relics you haven't found yet, for your belt. From World 3 there is a Draughts tab too.
Does the Shop cost real money?

No. Waxby has no in-app purchases and no ads. Everything in the Shop is paid for with embers found in the game.

Why did something I found sell by itself?

With Settings › Sell weaker finds on, a find that is no better than what you're wearing goes to Waxley as you pick it up. It never sells a Legendary. Tap the find's card to keep it, or turn the setting off to keep everything.

About the game

Does Waxby need the internet?

No. It plays fully offline and never connects to anything. See the privacy policy.

Which iPhones does it run on?

An iPhone XS, XR or newer, on iOS 15 or later. Waxby is made for iPhone held sideways. An iPad can run the iPhone version, but it isn't tuned for iPad.
